Welcome Art this New Year

We find ourselves submersed in a culture brimming with social gatherings, holiday treats, and an abundance of wrapping paper and bows. Sometimes, the excitement of this season can grab hold of us, so much that we forget to cherish the small splendors around us. 

With this being said, I have a challenge for you this New Year.

Amongst the cocktail parties you attend and the greeting cards you send, I ask you to take some time for yourself and reflect on what is most important to you. I recently did some self-reflecting myself, and I had several realizations about my life. 

1. I am lucky enough to live in a city constantly beaming with such a lively performing arts culture. Minneapolis is home to the Walker Art Center, the Guthrie, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and, of course, Northrop! Each of these venues brings a unique artistic style to the city, and what better time to appreciate the performing arts than the holiday season?
2. I am surrounded by an incredible and unique array of people, who have had a tremendous influence on me. I didn’t realize until recently just how much of an impact my beautiful friends and family have had on me, but for this, I owe a million thank-yous. How about spending an afternoon at the art museum, or a night on the town seeing the ballet to show my gratitude? I am personally looking forward to the upcoming 100^th anniversary performance of The Rite of Spring by the Joffrey Ballet. This leading ballet company exemplifies the highest standard of classical training, and expresses a unique, inclusive perspective on dance that reflects America’s diversity. 
3. There is, as it turns out, a light at the end of every tunnel. It is so easy to get caught up in the stress of finals and projects at work that I often forget to take time for myself. A good way to unwind after a hectic semester: listening to the classical styling’s of Accordo. Minnesota’s own chamber based group will bring their classical and contemporary music to the intimate setting of Christ Church Lutheran this February, with their concert In the Footsteps of Bach. 

And there you have it. So before you take those Jingle Bell cookies out of the oven, and dance the night away with your loved ones, I ask you to reflect on what’s most important to you, just like I did.  

With the New Year begun, you will be all set to move forward with a fresh outlook on the life you live. Cheers!
