Guess what?! It’s FINALLY summertime here in Minnesota! And you know what that means… shorts, flip flops, sun kissed skin, carefree summer nights, and MUSIC! The Northrop Summer Music Festival 2013 extravaganza is on its way.
The Northrop Summer Music Festival is planned and advised by the Northrop Student Advisory Committee, a motivated group of diverse students devoted to bringing local music, for free, to fellow University of Minnesota students and the greater Twin Cities community. We are thrilled to announce the line-up curated by this oh-so-brilliant Northrop Student Advisory Committee in collaboration with Northrop staff and Sue McLean and Associates. We’re ready for a summer full of rockin’ music on the Northrop Plaza. The 2013 series will feature a mixture of genres including Latin, hip-hop, folk, Americana, bluegrass, reggae, spoken word, electro pop, and indie music.
Kicking off the festival on June 7 will be our annual salsa night featuring headliner Charanga Tropical and DJ Fatty. This pair will be sure to make you want to grab a partner and rock your hips to the nine-piece salsa ensemble and Latin-infused DJ set. On June 12, U of M student band The Tasty Tones will wow audiences with their nine-piece horn set playing a wide range of tunes. The powerful presence of Chastity Brown will be headlining the June 21 concert with her unique Americana soul girl power. Sharing the stage with Chastity will be Southwire and The Ericksons, presenting folk influenced melodies. Improvisational at the core, Steve Kaul & The Brass Kings will perform their blend of old-time, middle-eastern, and bluegrass music on July 10. We are stoked to have Toki Wright taking the stage with his booming beats on July 19 along with Sarah White and DJ Don Cuco opening with their smoky hip-hop/soul rhythms. The annual summer open mic from the U of M student spoken word group Voices Merging will take place July 26. Wrapping up the NSMF 2013 will be U of M student band Gloss with their electro-pop sound.
Get your dancin’ shoes on and boogy, jump, hippity hop, skip, wiggle, and rock the mall along with Northrop this summer! Did I mention there will be FREE food and beverages donated by local vendors throughout the series and a chance to win prizes? Catch some rays, revel in the summer night’s breeze, chow down, and enjoy some tunes. Yeah. It’s going be a great summer.
