2013-14 Northrop MOVES Season:
HUBBARD STREET DANCE CHICAGOSat, Sep 21, 8:00 pmState Theatre
The 95th season will open with one of America’s favorite contemporary companies, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. They will perform Casi-Casa, featuring forty minutes of movement invented by the highly observative, world-renowned Swedish choreographer, Mats Ek and a score by the Swedish band, Fleshquartet. The unique set utilizes domestic items such as a vacuum cleaner, a chair, and an oven. The versatile, emotion-filled, and rich social staging will give you with a Saturday night of entertainment that you won’t forget.

We will begin our powerful copresented 2013-14 Women of Substance series with the presentation of the explosive Gallim Dance. Artistic Director Andrea Miller has created Blush, a sixty-minute performance out of exploring the action of human blushing. Yes, Blush, the expression of a range of human emotion brushed across our faces.
BALLET PRELJOCAJWed, Oct 30, 7:30 pmOrpheum Theatre
After stunning Minnesota audiences with the epically theatrical Snow White in 2012, we will welcome the return of Ballet Preljocaj featuring their U.S. Premiere of And then, one thousand years of peace. This performance will be a distinct interpretation of the Apocalypse. Angelin Preljocaj’s investigative approach and view into our existence in this piece is far from cliché.
SHANGHAI BALLETMN DebutTue, Nov 12, 7:30 pmOrpheum Theatre
Never before seen in Minnesota, Northrop presents world-renowned classical ballet company, Shanghai Ballet, known for their flawless Russian-influenced ballet training fused with Chinese folk style. This disciplined, steadfast troupe will precisely stage The Butterfly Lovers, portraying a Romeo and Juliet like-story. The Chinese tradition will be described through both costuming and backdrops on the Orpheum stage creating an ornamented, colorful, and whimsical panorama of visual interest.

Our Women of Substance series will close with an outstanding presentation of the Kate Weare Company who will perform Garden. This performance will highlight a quartet expressing the wide choreographic language produced by Kate Weare herself. The piece will deal with ideologies concerning origination and identity in the natural world. The company will also showcase excerpts from an exciting new work, Dark Lark.
WAYNE MCGREGOR | RANDOM DANCETue, Jan 14, 7:30 pmOrpheum Theatre
Starting off the New Year will be the mesmerizing Wayne McGregor | Random Dance. We will see the performance of FAR, inspired by the Age of Enlightenment, featuring a score by Brian Eno in collaboration with Ben Frost as well as a computerized pin board illuminated by 3,200 LED lights. Don’t miss this ground-breaking performance.
ROYAL NEW ZEALAND BALLETMN DebutSat, Feb 8, 8:00 pmOrpheum Theatre
Our third ballet presentation will be the Minnesota Debut of the Royal New Zealand Ballet. This performance will consist of works including 28 Variations on a Theme by Paganini, Banderilliero, as well as Bier Halle pas de deux. The Royal New Zealand Ballet will captivate you with classical ballet and a taste of dynamic contemporary ballet for the whole family. Live ballet is always a thrill. It’s hard to know which is more fun - being a child and seeing it all for the first time or being the adult who gets to show and explain everything to a child.
TRISHA BROWN DANCE COMPANY: Proscenium Works, 1979-2011Copresented with Walker Art CenterWed-Sat, Mar 12-15, 8:00 pmWalker Art Center
In a copresentation with Walker Art Center, the season closes with the farewell tour of Trisha Brown Dance Company. This performance will feature classic works including Set and Reset and If You Couldn’t See Me as well as the final work created by Trisha Brown, I’m going to toss my arms — if you catch them they’re yours. For over forty years, Trisha Brown has presented her legendary work to audiences across the world. We are overjoyed with the privilege of presenting the Trisha Brown Dance Company as apart of their final three-year tour. See this performance and experience human body motion that is so elegantly expressed by the Trisha Brown Dance Company.
