Opening this Friday for the next concert in the Northrop Summer Music Festival’s exciting line-up are experimental hip-hop artists Sarah White and DJ Don Cuco. Born and raised in Minneapolis, Sarah White is a singer/emcee known for her sultry and infectious vocals saturated with lyrical content. The smoky-eyed lyricist works with various genres, mixing sounds from electrodub, crunk, tribal, and jazz-soul to create her own hip-hop fusion. Paralleling the hip-hop innovation of Sarah, Rico Simon Mendez, aka DJ Don Cuco, is known to have a natural touch at blending the harmony of sound and spirit, molding it into a musical movement. He continually builds relationships through music by creating soundscapes with rare selections from scenes across the globe. Together they share a passion for finding new ways to merge the adjectives of indigenous, electronic, and urban all into one musical journey.
The two have been pursuing music together for the past nine years, continually pushing themselves to experiment more and break the limitations of existing genres. Sarah and Rico are currently working on Cultura Love, a self-titled collaboration where “all artists can express their true passion in the form of color, sound, mind, body, vision and spirit.” Cultura Love’s aim is to work in communities with youth who don’t have an outlet to express themselves creatively and also to raise funds through art based events and music for educational programming and communities of disaster and economic crisis. Sarah and Rico want nothing more than to highlight the intersections of love, culture, and music through their artistry and music.
Join us this Friday evening at 7:00 pm on the Northrop Plaza for one of the summer’s biggest concerts on campus, as Sarah and Rico open with their soulful experiments, followed by the rhymes of fellow hip-hop emcee Toki Wright. There will also be drink refreshments courtesy of Raising Cane’s and freeze pops provided by Northrop.
For now, here’s a glimpse of the music you will experience with the music video of Sarah White’s single “Limitless”, an eclectic and futuristic soul based groove produced by Cultura Love.
