U of M Grito y Fiesta de Danza

Immediately following the performance of Tania Pérez-Salas Compañia de Danza

Each year, over Mexico's Independence from Spain, an official GRITO (the cry for independence) is used to proclaim independence and other important matters. This special grito is planned in conjunction with the Consulate of México in St. Paul, Minnesota and the U of M Department of Chicano Studies.

After the grito, Minnesota's hottest radio show featuring Mexican music, Radio Pocho from KFAI, will play a live DJ set and fill the mall with the latest and greatest Mexican dance music. This outdoor dance event features different musical influences celebrating the rich diversity of Mexican dance music including bachata, cumbia, funk, hip-hop, jazz, merengue, reggae, rock, salsa, samba, soul, and Chicano/Tejano.
