Matthew Bourne’s Highland Fling
with live orchestra
Choreographer Matthew Bourne, whose work is as at home on the Broadway stage as it is in the ballet studio, has bestowed a great gift on the Scottish Ballet: exclusive rights to perform his "wicked and compulsively watchable" Highland Fling. A gritty and tartan-filled reworking of the classic romantic ballet La Sylphide, Bourne’s smash hit version has been unofficially dubbed “Trainspotting: The Ballet.” Set in the mean streets of Glasgow, the story follows the club-hopping, recently-married James as he becomes infatuated with a beguiling gothic fairy. Whether drug-induced hallucination or witchcraft, his obsession sends him on a fateful journey into a magical world beyond reality and reason. With Matthew Bourne’s genius for telling a story through dance, and the Scottish Ballet’s great technique and finesse in creating memorable characters, Highland Fling promises to be a “rampageous romp”—with live orchestra, too!
*Audience advisory: Due to adult themes, this show is recommended for ages 12 and up.
“This is one of the funniest, funkiest, most irresistibly infectious ballets I have ever had the delight to sit through.” -Daily Mail
