Larry Ochs Sax & Drumming Core

"...Larry Ochs leads this multifaceted exposition through an over-the-top approach to the drummers' swarming frameworks and swirling support mechanisms."  - Glenn Astarita, All About JazzNorthrop begins its jazz season with a special presentation and rare entrée into the world of free jazz, showcasing improv master Larry Ochs at the most intimate venue on campus, The Whole Music Club (located in the basement of Coffman Memorial Union). From the same school as improve-based artists Albert Ayler and Sonny Rollins, Larry Ochs' free jazz weaves with the Drumming Core, creating original roots music with rigorous attention to form as was heard with such duos as Coltrane and Rashied Ali, and Anthony Braxton with Max Roach.Performing together since 2000, the five-piece quintet is said to be modern and urban, deriving from an interpretation of American and Eastern European blues-shouters songs and traditional Asian and African chant-singers. Led by the high priest of improv, Larry Ochs (sopranino, tenor sax), the Drumming Core also consists of Scott Amendola (drums), Donald Robinson (drums) and special guests from Japan - Satoko Fujii (piano) and Natsuki Tamura (trumpet).--Special support provided by Jazz is NOW!
