Charles Atlas’ OCEAN

In September 2008, the Walker Art Center and Northrop, along with the College of St. Benedict, the St. Cloud Symphony, and Martin Marietta Materials brought you one of the largest, most memorable live performing art events in Minnesota's (and the nation's) history-legendary Merce Cunningham and John Cage's most ambitious work to date performed at the bottom of the stunning Rainbow Quarry in Waite Park, Minnesota. The event was seen by 4,500 audience members, featured 150 musicians, supported by hundreds of staff and volunteers, and attracted press from around the world. Its combination of exquisite dance, captivating live music, and massive stone environment stunned everyone lucky enough to be there. Cunningham was there for the entire production and later told us it was one of the true highlights of his 60-plus year career. Ten months later, he passed away at age 90.Acclaimed filmmaker and long-time Cunningham collaborator Charles Atlas was there with a five-member film crew all week as well. Now, after two years of editing, the feature-length OCEAN will receive its world premiere at the Walker Cinema on Wednesday, September 15, in a special benefit showing in support of the Merce Cunningham Legacy Fund. We hope you can join us for the single debut showing of the film, introduced by Atlas and followed by a cocktail party and reception.
