Gov Mark Dayton has proclaimed Nov 11 as “Armistice Centennial Remembrance Day” and notes that the World War I Centennial Commission has called upon Americans across the nation to toll bells in remembrance of those who served in World War 1, starting at 11:00 am. To commemorate the centennial of the Armistice, the Oratorio Society of Minnesota, the Minnesota Military Museum and Northrop will join in the nationwide Bells of Peace ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 10:45 am with opening remarks and the reading of Laurence Binyon’s 1914 poem For the Fallen. At 11:00 am, there will be tolling of a bell 21 times, based on the 21-gun salute, the nation’s highest honor. The ceremony will then move inside to Northrop’s Memorial Hall where the names of each of the 1,094 Minnesota soldiers killed in combat during World War I will be read. The ceremony will conclude at approximately 2:00 p.m.
