Mikhail Baryshnikov called her “one of the most innovative choreographers of this generation…” and commissions from American Ballet Theatre, Houston Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago—to name just a few—certainly make her one of the busiest! Aszure Barton & Artists make their Northrop debut with Awáa, a work overflowing "with emotion and rhythmic heart,” (Washington Post) manifesting the sensuality, humor, and “whole-body expression” that have become Barton’s trademarks. Not only a dance, but a full-on production, Awáa combines video projections inspired by a vivid underwater dream with an original score of soaring strings and soulful tribal drumming. The end result is a hauntingly beautiful meditation on the life-giving forces in humanity and nature.
