19 Poses for the 19th Amendment Workshop

Northrop has canceled all events until at least Apr 30 in an effort to help contain the spread of COVID-19. Ticket holders have been contacted but those with additional questions can contact the Northrop Box Office at 612-624-2345, umntix@umn.edu.

For the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment that granted women the right to vote in the United States, join Martha Graham Dance Company members in this hourlong workshop in the state's Capitol Rotunda learning the history behind and practicing MGDC's 19 Poses for the 19th Amendment.

Created as part of The EVE Project, The 19 Poses both honors the Suffragettes and accentuates Martha Graham’s revolutionary approach to representing women onstage. In an era when female characters in dance were generally goddesses, princesses, flowers, or swans, Graham began dancing complex, flawed, determined, and very powerful women–both heroines and anti-heroines–including Medea, Phaedra, Jocasta, Emily Dickinson, and Clytemnestra. These poses comprise 19 photographs of Graham in evocative moments from various performances from her long career.
