¡Sacabuche! with Ann Waltner and John Watkins
¡Sacabuche!, an early music ensemble directed by Linda Pearse, explores the world of Venice portrayed in Jacopo di Barbari’s map of the city, published in 1500. The winding streets of the map and the polyphony of the music resonate with one another. Texts read by Ann Waltner and John Watkins are pulled from a variety of sixteenth and seventeenth-century Venetian sources, including prominent authors and ordinary people. The music is performed by the voices, sackbuts, organ, theorbo, harp, violins, and shawm of jSacabuche! and includes 16th- and 17th-century sacred Venetian music, 17th-century Ottoman and Sephardic music, lute song, Renaissance wind band music, chant, lauda, and new music composed by Kevin Morse. Music performed includes pieces by Claudio Monteverdi, Giovanni Gabrieli, Tromboncino and others. After the performance, Pearse, Watkins, and Waltner will discuss the process of creation of the project.
