Jean-Pierre Perreault's JOE

Little did famed Canadian choreographer Jean-Pierre Perreault imagine when he created JOE for college students in 1983 that he had launched a phenomenon so potent that crowds would still clamor to see it two decades later. The sprawling sociological masterpiece embraces a world of “ordinary joes”, an unforgettable parade of souls. This one-act tour de force is a profound illustration of universal truths about society and human nature.

About the Company

In 1984 the Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault was formed. After researching the influence of costumes, traditional dance and functional movement on the vocabulary of choreography, Perreault sought to develop a form of dance rooted in its surroundings, and creating its own music though complex rhythmic steps. Perreault's first realization of this new idea was the contemporary workJOE, which debuted in Montreal and became the company’s signature work. Since 1994, the Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault has toured all over North America with JOE, receiving universal praise. Perreault has received several awards for his innovative work including the 1999 Grand Prix for artistic excellence (Montreal Urban Community Arts Council), and the 2002 Canadian Governor General’s Performing Arts Award. Perreault’s foundation has also continued to develop and perform other new works that examine the constancy of the human condition through dance. Despite the untimely death of Jean –Pierre Perreault in March 2002, the troupe is honoring the 20th anniversary of JOE’s creation with their 2004 tour of the production.

Critic's Comments

“…the dancing is compelling to watch…the combination of Perreault’s stark set…and Jean Gervais’ intricate lighting patterns, create a visual universe that pulls the audience in, then keeps it rapt.”

-Pittsburgh Tribune Review

“…staged and danced to perfection…”

-The Gazette

Evening's Program

JOEJean-Pierre Perreault approached this work believing that human beings are sensitive to two things: to others and to the space they live in. Thus a metaphorical and architectural world inhabited by “ordinary joes” is brought to life. Outfitted in baggy coats and rumpled fedoras, the men and women of JOE fight to survive in a conformist culture, creating a pulsating rhythmic soundscape with their drumming footfalls. Intricate lighting patterns, and a minimalist set highlight Perreault’s trademark runs, staccatos, ruptures, sounds and rhythms. This show is 70 minutes and performed without intermission.
