10–Year Anniversary Tour

"This enlightened restoration of the most neglected and personal of [Balanchine's] full-length works is not just news but an experience that takes us deep into the soul of genius."  – The Los Angeles Times

As part of Northrop's new yearly commitment to presenting the work of George Balanchine in the Twin Cities, we are excited to present the Minnesota debut of one of ballet's most acclaimed artists, Suzanne Farrell. A legendary figure in the dance world, Suzanne Farrell is considered to be the most influential American ballerina of the late 20th century and emerged as the most inspiring ballet teacher and director after retiring in 1989. As part of the Balanchine Preservation Initiative, Farrell is dedicated to continuing the legacy of George Balanchine's classic, rarely seen, or "lost" work. The two programs roughly trace the chronology of her mentor's work and her own experiences with the Bejart Ballet.

Mixed Rep

Friday at 8:00 pm
A mixed repertory features short ballets or sections of longer ballets together in one program. You will see parts of three ballets choreographed by Balanchine—the Pas d’Action from Divertimento No. 15, Contrapuntal Blues pas de deux from Clarinade, and Agon, a ballet that revolutionized dance forever. You will also see the Scène d’Amour from Romeo and Juliet by French choreographer Maurice Béjart.

• Pas d'Action from Divertimento No. 15 (1956): Music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
• Contrapuntal Blues Pas de deux from Clarinade (1964): Music by Morton Gould
• Béjart: Scene d'Amour from Romeo and Juliet (1966): Music by Hector Berlioz
• Agon (1957): Music by Igor Stravinsky

The Balanchine Couple

Saturday at 2:00 pm
At this unique performance experience, you will see the company in The Balanchine Couple. This performance features nine selections of partnered dance, with narration by Suzanne Farrell. The program is presented in loose chronology, reflecting Balanchine’s evolving career as an American choreographer.

• Apollo (1928): Music by Igor Stravinsky
• La Sonnambula (1946): Music by Vittorio Rieti
• The Unanswered Question from Ivesiana (1954): Music by Charles Ives
• La Valse (1951): Music by Maurice Ravel
• Agon (1957): Music by Igor Stravinsky
• Meditation (1963): Music by Igor Stravinsky
• Pas de Mauresque from Don Quixote (1965): Music by Nicolas Nabokov
