Why put all my weight behind UBW?
Founder Jawole Willa Jo Zollar says it all with this quote about starting UBW: "I envisioned a company founded on the energy, vitality and boldness of the African-American community that I grew up in. I wanted a company that brought forth the vulnerability, sassiness and bodaciousness of the women I experienced growing up in Kansas City."
And the troupe does just that. You've got catalytic social change, strong sense of community, foundation-shaking contemporary dance, timeless storytelling and music, unabashed sexual expression, and historical context packing a powerful punch of independent, irresistible woman.
The piece UBW will be presenting is "Zollar: Uncensored". It comes from a place of challenge, with its history of being a collection of works (The Papess and excerpts from My Female Hand, Marinesa, and Batty Moves) repressed in the 80's as the arts presenters found it too controversial. Finally, today it is getting the attention it deserves, as a piece that probes into the sensual psyche of woman, focusing on her strength and power.
