About
THE REVITALIZATION OF NORTHROP BEGINS!
FEBRUARY 2011 - FALL 2013
On Friday, February 11, 2011, the Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota gave final approval for the Revitalization of Northrop.
The construction process for Northrop's revitalization continues to move smoothly with the major structural demolition almost complete. The demolition contractor will be wrapping up the remaining concrete removals from the building in the next few weeks. Crews are currently working on the highly sensitive process of re-supporting several existing columns, allowing them to carry more capacity. Meanwhile, footings and walls are being poured for the new audience chamber of the performance hall with the installation of steel to follow at the end of December. Tenants are currently scheduled to take occupancy in September 2013 with a grand opening anticipated in March 2014 once the performance hall is ready. Of course, our exciting plans for programming a series of the world's best artists for the grand opening, as well as next season, are underway and will continue to evolve over the next year.
An architectural treasure, Northrop is an enduring symbol of the University, the focal point of the Twin Cities campus, and the anchor of the Northrop Mall. Since opening in 1929, Northrop has served as the University's primary gathering place for the performing arts, concerts, academic ceremonies, and major civic events.
The University stabilized and restored the building's exterior in 2006, and in the same year, the strategy for fundamentally rethinking Northrop's interior was developed by an Advisory Committee.
The New Northrop will fuel innovation and creativity, and serve students, faculty, artists, audiences, and the State of Minnesota.
A vital center of academic distinction and discovery that brings together three University-wide signature programs: The University Honors Program, the Institute for Advanced Study, and Innovation by Design.
A preeminent cultural and performing arts center with a world-class, multi-purpose 2,800± seat hall featuring state-of-the-art acoustics, fabulous sightlines, cutting-edge technologies, and updated amenities.
The New Northrop will be home to Northrop Concerts and Lectures, bringing the most creative and innovative artists and changemakers of our time.
A bustling, dynamic destination for collaboration and study, central to everyday life on campus, complete with a global conference center and premium seminar and meeting rooms. The New Northrop will increase by 50% the amount of public study and collaborative space on the East Bank.
A global platform that uses the latest technologies to engage the world's most innovative thinkers, connecting the University with world-wide audiences, and enabling academic, cultural, and civic programs to build upon existing initiatives.
A café and coffee bar will serve students, faculty, and patrons at Northrop.
