Guidelines for Student Matinee Chaperones

We are excited to welcome students and chaperones to Northrop!

To ensure student safety while on campus and promote an engaging student matinee experience, chaperones for groups visiting Northrop for a student matinee performance are responsible for:

Managing student behavior:

  • Gum, food, and beverages remain outside of the theater.
  • Feet on the floor during the performance.
  • Please walk in the theater and all spaces within Northrop.
  • Cell phones OFF - photos and video during the performance are not permitted.
  • School appropriate language. The student matinee audience is made up of students as young as 8 years old and as old as 18 years old. Please monitor students for appropriate language in our public space.

Youth Supervision at all times.

  • This includes restroom areas, lobby spaces, and any transitional activities.
  • Students leaving the theater for any reason during the matinee must be accompanied by a chaperone. Northrop is a large, public building with multiple offices and departments at work. For the safety of students, please have a chaperone accompany any student who is not in the theater.

Maintain University of Minnesota Safety of Minors adult to youth ratio*:

  • 1:8 for 3rd grade and younger
  • 1:10 for 4th-8th grades
  • 1:12 for 9th-12th grades

*Appropriate number of chaperones per school group must be confirmed with the Education Coordinator prior to arrival. Please email matinees@umn.edu with any questions regarding Chaperone policies and guidelines.

Chaperones should not hesitate to ask our friendly and experienced staff of ushers or Front of House Managers for any assistance or questions regarding these guidelines.

Thank you for supporting Northrop and we look forward to your visit!
